Productivity Press' Creating Mixed Model Value Streams Key In
Implementing Lean In More Complex Environments
NEW YORK . . . Productivity Press, the leading publisher of high-quality
material on lean manufacturing and business improvement, proudly introduces
Creating Mixed Model Value Streams — Practical Lean Techniques for Building
to Demand, by Kevin J. Duggan. This comprehensive, practical, how-to book
shows how to apply value stream mapping and lean concepts in the more complex
environment of mixed model (high variety) manufacturing.
Duggan uses a step-by-step approach, illustrated through a case study based
on actual experience, to go beyond the basics of value stream mapping and to
show how to create future states in the real manufacturing world of multiple
products, varying cycle times and changing demand.
Highlights include:
- Mapping value streams in real-life manufacturing environments
- Developing future states that can respond to daily changes in customer
demand
- Creating flow through the "pacemaker" process when products have different
cycle times
- Setting up mixed model heijunka (load leveling) boxes that provide visual
schedules at regular intervals
- Applying mix logic charts to determine finished-goods strategies and meet
seasonal demand
- A bonus CD-ROM featuring useful spreadsheets and value stream maps
About the Author Kevin J. Duggan, President, Duggan and Associates,
Inc., faculty member of the Lean Enterprise Institute and L.E.I. Canada, gained
his lean knowledge by developing and implementing lean concepts in the early
90's. In the midst of batch manufacturing, Kevin pioneered lean concepts into
the world's largest toy company, Hasbro, Inc. There he developed advanced
concepts of flow and mixed model that he later implemented throughout many
companies across North America, including Whirlpool, General Mills, Perker
Elmer, Gorton's, Sikorsky Aircraft, Georgia Pacific, United Technologies,
Messier-Dowty and Thomas & Betts.

Advance Praise for Creating Mixed Model Value Streams — Practical Lean
Techniques for Building to Demand, By Kevin J. Duggan:
"Finally, a book that addresses the real world complexity of
implementing lean in a mixed model environment! Creating Mixed Model Value
Streams is must reading for anyone who is trying to make improvements beyond
a basic value stream map. From selecting a product family to scheduling and
dealing with customer demand, this book shows you how to implement a lean value
stream in a way that everyone will understand."
—Glynn Miller, Director, Consumer Centered Enterprise,
Whirlpool Corporation
"This excellent how-to-guide will help set free those of us who have been
handcuffed by complexity in our manufacturing systems. It translates theoretical
lean into practical guidance for use in the trenches."
—Al Mason, Manager, Process Improvement, Goodrich
Corporation
"Kevin Duggan has captured the very essence of what he has taught at two of
my factories. It matters little if you produce laboratory instruments or fish
sticks; the lessons of Creating Mixed Model Value Streams are readily
transferable to any organization 'Willing to See'."
—Thomas A. Wesley, Director, Worldwide Quality, Waters
Corporation
"We work with companies across all industry sectors enabling them to keep
increasing their levels of Lean expertise. One of the issues we see them
struggle with time and again is, 'How do we make product flow when there are a
variety of products in the same value stream?' Without any quality books on the
topic, it has been no easy task to explain — until now. This book demystifies
and simplifies the concept of Flow in complex environments. When you put the
book down, you will understand there is a solution to your situation. Your only
regret will be — 'why didn't I have this knowledge sooner?'."
—Larry D. Coté, Lean Advisors Inc.
"This book takes you through a clear step-by-step process using the case of
Electro-Motion Control (EMC) Supply Company — 'a manufacturer of a variety of
parts and products for the motion control and electronic industries'. Thank
heaven we have moved out of automotive!"
